The Wood County Youth Olympics has been CANCELLED

March 10, 2020

After consultation with many sources, based upon the recommendations of Governor DeWine, and at the recommendation of the Wood County Department of Health, I regret to announce that the 2020 Wood County Youth Olympics, currently scheduled for this Saturday, March 14th, has been cancelled. While the current known cases of COVID-19, the so-called Coronavirus, are few in this State and far away, the concern has grown so great that the Youth Olympics Committee can no longer anticipate putting so many adults and children together in good conscience. The Committee is so very grateful to the many individuals who have worked diligently and enthusiastically to bring this event to fruition and to the many sponsors for their financial support. Thanks as well goes out the many people who were prepared to volunteer their time and energy for this great event. Finally and most importantly, we wish to thank and apologize to the many participants and their family members, who have been looking forward to this Saturday with such anticipation. We were excited that we were in the final countdown and nothing but the best interests for your health and safety could have stopped us. Unfortunately, that is the very concern we face. We hope and trust that these significant precautions which are being taken around the State and around the country will keep this illness at bay.

We thank the citizens of our great county for their understanding of this sad news.

Paul Dobson, Wood County Prosecutor

Volunteers

The Youth Olympics are coordinated with the assistance of community volunteers, including elected officials, law enforcement officers, and school personnel. Every year the event relies not only on participation from students but also on the generosity of volunteers and sponsors.

Volunteers are essential to the overall success of the event. In order to properly run the Youth Olympics, over 200 volunteers are needed throughout the day. Volunteers are responsible for a variety of activities including the running of events, team leaders, timers, scoring, and registration.
